Welcome! I’m looking forward to an enjoyable and productive school year.

*Homework*
Completing daily assignments in math is essential to success. My philosophy is that homework is the students’ opportunity to learn; and sometimes more can be learned from errors than from correct answers. A completed assignment will never earn less than a “C- (70%)”. Completed means every problem is copied from the book (if applicable), every problem was attempted, and all work has been shown. Homework is usually assigned every other day and most of the time can be completed in class. It could be graded in a variety of ways, including effort, scoring a sampling of problems and scoring all problems. Students will be checking their own homework assignments with a checking pen. During this time, they are responsible for scoring the paper appropriately and asking questions if they don’t understand a certain problem/topic.
*Late Work*
Late work will be accepted during the current chapter only and automatically earns a “C- (70%)” grade. All missing work will receive a “0” until it has been turned in appropriately. Students who have difficulty completing an assignment because they need additional help will be granted more time, with no penalty, IF a parent signature is on the assignment the day the assignment is due. An assignment is considered late if it is turned in after the “checking time” has elapsed.
*Make-up Policy with Reference to Absences*
Carleton’s policy allows double the time the student was absent to complete missing work. However, this does not pertain to long-term assignments, major projects, or tests/quizzes that are announced in advance and should be written in the agenda.
*Homework/Test/Quiz Info*
Students are expected to be prepared for each class with a pencil, checking pen (any color), loose-leaf paper, textbook, ****spiral notebook (for math notes)****, homework (if applicable) and reading book. All work must be done in PENCIL and checked with a PEN, otherwise it will not be accepted. Students who forget the required materials will not be permitted to go to their lockers and will receive a "0" grade for that assignment/day.
*Classroom Supply Donations*
Our class uses various supplies throughout the school year. We would greatly appreciate any supplies that you are willing to donate. Some examples are: tissue boxes, hand sanitizer, wipes, pencils, pens (any color), markers, crayons, colored pencils, individually wrapped peanut-free candy, paper towel, etc. Thank you!
*Procedures*
Turning in Papers: All papers must be turned into the appropriate hour’s basket. If you want to guarantee that your paper is lost forever you can hand it to Mrs. Buchanan or put it on her desk. J
Borrowing Pencils/Pens: If you forget a pencil or pen you may borrow one by writing your name on the check-out sheet. All supplies must be returned at the end of the hour.
Agenda: Daily agenda is written on the white-board every day. This should be copied into the student’s agenda at the beginning of the hour.
Daily Materials: Materials needed for the day are listed on the whiteboard attached to the classroom door.
Extra Worksheets: A bucket in the classroom is filled with extra copies of all homework worksheets for students who were absent or need to make-up missing assignments.
Leaving Your Seat: During teacher instruction, please ask permission to get out of your seat. During independent work you may get out of your seat to sharpen pencils, throw away trash, etc., without asking permission.
Reading Book: Since reading is essential in all content areas, each student needs to bring a book/magazine to class each day. In the event that he/she finishes their work early, the student will be allowed to use the extra time to read his/her book.
*Leaving the Room During Class*
Students will be given 5 bathroom/locker passes every 5 weeks. Students should only use these passes in an emergency and NOT during instruction time. Students may not use a pass if they were tardy that day. Any unused passes can be entered into a drawing for a prize at the end of the 5 week time period.
*Home Communication*
Parents can access their child’s grade 24/7 using Powerschool Parent Portal. I will update this regularly so you can stay informed of your child’s progress. If you are unsure how to log on, there is an informational hand-out available in the main office. If you are unable to access the internet and would like me to send printed copies home, please let me know. Please also check the class website regularly for homework assignments, test/quiz dates, and other updates. http://mrsbuchanan2.weebly.com You may also sign up to receive text message notifications for tests and quizzes.

*Discipline*
Please refer to the agenda for Carleton’s code of conduct and school policies. In addition to those guidelines, our class has only one rule: RESPECT (teachers, other students, classroom/supplies, and yourself). Students are expected to follow school and classroom rules. In the rare instance that a student does not do so, there will be consequences. Since each student is unique and each situation is unique, incidents will be dealt with on an individual basis.
Student citizenship grades will be determined by his/her daily conduct in class using a daily behavior log. Each student's name is written in a log with six categories.
Citizenship grades are:
0-5 Dates in Chart = O: Outstanding (1)
6-10 Dates in Chart = S: Satisfactory (2)
11+ Dates in Chart = N: Needs to Improve (3)
*Electronic Communication Devices Policy*
Students are NOT allowed to use electronic communication devices in the classroom unless the teacher has instructed the students to utilize them for a specific activity. This will never be a required supply. If a student chooses to use his/her electronic device, they are solely responsible for anything they may happen to it.

Carleton’s policy allows double the time the student was absent to complete missing work. However, this does not pertain to long-term assignments, major projects, or tests/quizzes that are announced in advance and should be written in the agenda.
- Students who are absent on the day of a test are expected to make up the test the day they return to school. Students should take home their textbook/notes/supplies each night.
- Students who are absent on the day an assignment is due are expected to turn it in the first day back, otherwise it will be considered late.
- Students are responsible for getting and making up any missed assignments during an absence.
- When turning in absent work, students need to write ABSENT at the top of the paper to ensure that it does not get marked LATE.
*Homework/Test/Quiz Info*
- It is expected that all students are honest and do their own work on all tests, quizzes, and homework assignments. In the event that a student does not, he/she will receive a failing grade “0” that cannot be made up.
- Talking is not allowed during test/quiz time and will also result in a failing grade “0”. These zeros cannot be made up.
- A “TEST Re-do” is an option for all students if they would like to improve their TEST grade. A form must be filled out and all necessary information (given in class) must be turned in by the deadline indicated on the form. The test is offered after school on the date indicated on the form. The score on the re-do test becomes the new score in the grade book.
